Many countries all over the world, nowadays, are suffering from numerous water issues. In a rapidly changing world, the MENA region is challenged by a wide variety of natural and human-made conditions including water scarcity, demographic change, unemployment, poverty, changing consumption patterns, urbanization, rising water and food demands, growing energy needs, environmental degradation, climate change, water-related natural disasters and gender disparities. These challenges have significant implications on water availability and quality, and on the provision of ecosystems services; affecting as well the living conditions of current and future generations and impacting the migratory flows. Recently, many international conglomerates have emerged to present the water issue as a priority. Egypt faces variable water-related stresses and challenges. Moreover, Egypt is an example on how a developing country can highly be vulnerable to climate change and in the mean while, exposed to numerous threats concerning its economic, social and environmental sustainability. Egypt’s water is the most important pillar in achieving national wealth and prosperity. The realization of Egypt’s comprehensive “Sustainable Development Strategy 2030” and its related plans concerning social, economic and environmental dimensions is directly affected by the state’s capability to provide the necessary water resources. The Cairo Water Week 2018 (CWW) is considered as the biggest water-related event in Egypt, and it is planned to be organized annually by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, Egypt in collaboration with national, regional and international partners. It aims to promote water awareness and foster innovative approaches to face the most pressing water-related challenges, keep updates on global movements to address water challenges and identify modern tools and techniques for managing water resources.
The CWW 2018 started its first edition this year with the main theme “Water Conservation for Sustainable Development.” It has been initiated to be a platform for the exchange of expertise, development of appropriate solutions and formulation of recommendations for achievement of Egypt’s sustainable development goals, as it hosted high level official meetings, important activities, plenary and technical sessions
